XNB272, Biomechanics, Semester Two, Year 2, Biomechanical Analysis, Joshua Atkins
Assessment name: Biomechanical Analysis
Description: You will record a PowerPoint presentation describing a biomechanical
video analysis of a chosen movement. This is an authentic assessment because it is applying the skills required to perform a real-world biomechanical analysis
Learning outcomesmeasured:
LO1: Describe and explain the biomechanical principles as they apply to human movement and sports performance and injury prevention.
LO2: Conduct and interpret qualitative biomechanical analysis as they would be presented to a coach/clinician or athlete/patient.
LO3: Work in teams to apply the principles of biomechanics to describe, analyse, and evaluate human movement
What you need to do:
FOR A HUMAN MOVEMENT, EXERCISE OR SPORTS SKILL OF YOUR CHOICE:
1. Identify the biomechanical goal of the skill together with a deterministic
model;
2. Identify critical features (minimum of 2 qualitative and 2 quantitative
variables).
3. Explain in biomechanical terms (based on the literature) why these
critical features are important to achieve the goal of the skill;
4. Determine what are important considerations to record the skill (e.g.
camera position, lighting, background, frame rate, subject
preparation and instruction, markers placement).
5. Record the performance and the details of the session. (Week 7)
6. Select at least two variables to analyse quantitatively and two
qualitatively (Labs on Weeks 8 to 13)
7. Present and explain the results of the analysis in context to the published
literature
8. Suggest (based on the literature) biomechanical changes to improve the
performance according to its goal.
The above will form the basis of your oral presentation (recorded).
These will be presented under the following headings:
1. Determining what to observe (points 1, 2, and 3 above)
2. Observing the performance (points 4 and 5 above, including data
collection details)
3. Detecting fault and weakness (point 6 and 7 above)
4. Correcting the performance (point 8)
• The presentation involves recording a PowerPoint Presentation with
snapshots derived from your video footage (recorded during week
7). It is not necessary to include the video in your presentation.
• It is expected that you will present without a script and without
reading from notes. We are assessing your presentations skills,
which are different from reading skills.
• Make sure you provide references to support your claims where
possible. These will be checked. References should be only from
peer-reviewed literature (journal articles) or books. No website,
blogs or other internet sources.
Reference correctly the in-text (slides) and end-text reference list (last
slide). Again, these will be checked. Before you hand in your assignment
make sure this is done in a correct and consistent manner. You must have a
minimum of 10 references and at least 6 should be from peer-reviewed
scientific journals. All references in the reference list should be used in the
slides.
